Arc 2006 Hollywood Movie Watch Online

Synopsis :

“Arc” was originally shot back in 2006 and marked the debut of writer director Robert Ethan Gunnerson. The film is likely now receiving a belated release thanks to the presence of lead actor Peter Facinelli who has since gone on to bigger things with the teeny bopper goth hit “Twilight”. However, fans of the shoe gazing vampire series are unlikely to find much to enjoy here as the film is a decidedly rough affair, dealing with drug abuse, prostitution and child pornography.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Facinelli plays the ludicrously named Paris Pritchert, an ex-cop turned drug dealer and junkie who takes one last stab at redemption as he attempts to track down a missing young boy. As he delves deeper into the LA underworld, trying to keep himself awake by ingesting as many drugs as his body can handle, he uncovers a web of deceit which leads back to his dead father and a mysterious criminal with the painfully familiar sounding moniker ‘The Wolf’.

Despite the film’s woefully unoriginal premise, Gunnerson proves himself to be a good storyteller, and once it gets going the central mystery is reasonably gripping in an almost neo noir style. The plot is sufficiently complex, with plenty of corruption and betrayals, though it is let down by a truly ridiculous final revelation. Despite his daft and ill-judged name, Paris makes for an interesting protagonist, and his journey is more compelling than that of most other soul searchers. The drugs angle works well and gives the film a gritty air and a touch of unpredictability, with his investigative methods largely being dependent how high he is at any given time. Peter Facinelli is excellent in the lead role, adding depth to his character, successfully conveying a sense of inner turmoil and anchoring the film emotionally. As such, it perhaps works best as a character drama rather than as a hackneyed redemptive quest or detective yarn.

Unfortunately, Gunnerson falls into many of the traps that tend to snag first time directors and the film is pretentious, self important and simply far too long. Packed with would be literary references that are desperately at odds with the characters, and failed attempts to inject a little cod-philosophising into the proceedings, he far too often strays from the plot, seeming to be under the illusion that the film is offering some grand and significant commentary on the human condition. This is a shame, as the film does have a reasonably authentic feel, or at least a believably seedy atmosphere, of which far more could have been made.

Visually, the film is a hit and miss affair, mainly thanks to Gunnerson’s odd use of colour. Although for the most part the film is in black and white, he insists on throwing in sudden injections of bright colours and occasional sequences of full colour. Aside from some rather heavy handed examples of symbolism there seems to be no discernable point for this technique and it only distracts and undermines the atmosphere, giving the film the feel of a perfume advert at times. Gunnerson employs a real mishmash of visual trickery, including some split screen work, speeded up film and such, very much in the early-Aronofsky manner. Again, whilst some of this works well and is stylishly integrated into the film, for the most part it serves only to annoy, and he comes across as being a kid let loose with a new piece of video editing software, desperate to try out all of its fancy functions.
